Twenty-First Week in Ordinary Time
Memorial of Saint Monica

Dear my friends,
Here is the Gospel for us today according to St. Luke 7: 11-17

Jesus journeyed to a city called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd accompanied him. As he drew near to the gate of the city, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. A large crowd from the city was with her. When the Lord saw her, he was moved with pity for her and said to her, “Do not weep.” He stepped forward and touched the coffin; at this the bearers halted, and he said, “Young man, I tell you, arise!” The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all, and they glorified God, exclaiming, “A great prophet has arisen in our midst,” and “God has visited his people.” This report about him spread through the whole of Judea and in all the surrounding region.

This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

TODAY is Memorial of Saint Monica, the Mother of St. Augustine. The Gospel today tells us, Jesus is moved with pity. In his human nature, he feels much compassion for this grieving woman who has lost her only son. He feels her pain  so much.

Now in our each daily lives, as in the case of this widow, Jesus also meets each of us with compassion and will work a miracle if we let him. He also wants to relieve our pain, as he does for the widow in today’s Gospel. He forgives our sins and strengthens us to bear our pain for his sake, and for the sake of bringing more souls to eternal happiness in his kingdom.

In the Perpetual Adoration of the Eucharist, we adore Jesus Christ who, in his endless mercy, wants eternal life for each one of us. As Saint Faustina tells us, the treasury of his compassion is inexhaustible. Praise God! Do we trust in his endless merciful love for us all, the sinners?

Let’s pray: Lord Jesus Christ, what a joy and what a gift to have this time to be with you alone in this adoration! We want to hope in you more firmly. We want to love you with greater constancy in our daily lives. Help us to appreciate and remain in the state of grace. May we be moved with pity to others now and forever. Amen.
