Twenty-third Week in Ordinary Time

Dear my friends,
Here is the Gospel for us today according to Luke 6:39-42

He also told them a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? A disciple is not above his teacher, but every one when he is fully taught will be like his teacher. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, `Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in  your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your  brother’s eye.

This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

WHAT can we learn from the Gospel today? First, Jesus Christ wants us to think the best of others. It is necessary if we wish to grow in true love. It is easier to find fault in others than in ourselves.

We can’t help others overcome their faults if we are blinded by our own faults and misperceptions. How easy it is to misjudge others because we can’t see inside the other person. We also do not have access to all the facts of others. Jesus Christ wants us to realize that a critical and judgmental spirit crushes rather than heals. It oppresses rather than restores.

Secondly, from the Gospel today we learn that Jesus Christ wants us to have a clear-sighted, especially in our perception of sin. We must see ourselves correctly as God sees us with our faults, weaknesses, and strengths.

He knows our faults and sees all, even the imperfections and sins of the heart which we cannot recognize in ourselves. But he also patiently draws us to his mercy. He removes the cancer of sin which inhabits our hearts. We need a clear eyes to trust in his mercy and grace.

In the Perpetual Adoration of the Eucharist we worship Jesus Christ and ask him to help us always to praise rather than to criticize, to sympathize rather than to discourage, to build rather than to destroy, and to think of people at their best rather than at their worst. Jesus Christ has come to free us from the slavery to sin, fear, and condemnation. He restores us to abundant life both now and in eternity.

Let’s pray: Lord Jesus Christ, you want us to be your instruments of healing, pardon, and restoration for others. Grant us clear eyes for bad eyes can cause a lot of trouble that will only end in misery and disaster for us! Flood our hearts with your loving-kindness and mercy that we may only have room for charity and kindness towards our neighbors now and forever. Amen.
